Mask Play
This photo series happened between rows of peaches at an orchard in South Georgia. Mask Play relies on the environment as a collaborator. The peach trees, pruned to grow short and wide to encourage sun absorption and an easier harvest, create a dense, rounded canopy of greens that shifts to darkness as it nears the bottom of the frame. I wanted to create a character that played with these elements to ground the surrealism, making the masked figure feel less like a costume and more like a creature that belongs to the landscape.
Bed linens were draped and scrunched alongside baskets to build shapes and textures that emphasize the frame and echo the background. The low, heavy canopy 'hugs' our creature, who feels colossal in this compressed vertical space. A playful spirit roams the orchard.
