Off Leash
I love wandering outdoors with a dog off leash. Trails and property lines are mere abstractions to them. The rules slip away while the path unfolds impulsively but I trust it, I’ve got my buddy with me. This series captures a multi-year exploration of getting lost and not worrying about it.
Off Leash was captured on 35mm with a 60-year-old Minolta SRT 101 that fits in my bag and is seemingly indestructible. It’s a study on how we move through an environment when its constraints feel lifted. I followed and photographed these dogs through turbid creek beds, abandoned roads taken over by young conifers, and wobbly beds of peat moss. We trespassed, cut through, and waded across to find worlds where structure felt invisible and experience driven by curiosity. I want these photos to feel untethered, eerie, and whimsical because that's how I remember it and why I keep coming back.
